Darryl Stallworth, a native of Compton, California, faced a profound dilemma upon entering the legal profession as a prosecutor: how could he reconcile his background and values with a career that involved prosecuting primarily Black defendants? Despite the internal conflict, he embarked on a path within the Alameda County prosecutor’s office, driven by a desire to make a difference in a criminal justice system plagued by systemic issues.
His decision to become a prosecutor stemmed from a deep-rooted belief in the potential for positive change within the system. Raised amidst the challenges of inner-city life, Stallworth witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of crime on his community. Armed with a bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley and a law degree from UC Davis, he felt compelled to leverage his education and experiences to contribute to meaningful reform.
For 15 years, Stallworth brought a unique perspective to his role as a prosecutor, striving to address the underlying issues perpetuating crime in marginalized communities. However, in 2007, he made the difficult decision to leave his position, feeling a growing need for a more proactive approach to combating crime.
Transitioning to private practice, Stallworth joined Taylor, Goins & Stallworth LLP, where he focused on criminal defense, infusing his legal expertise with a commitment to fostering faith, hope, and love among his clients. Recognizing the evolving nature of criminal behavior in the 21st century, he sought to not only defend but also prevent crime through community outreach and education initiatives.
In 2009, Stallworth established his own practice, further expanding his ability to advocate for both his clients and the broader community. Engaging with various organizations, he pursued his goal of crime prevention by empowering youth and providing support to families impacted by the criminal justice system.
His departure from the District Attorney’s Office marked not a separation, but a graduation to a new phase of his career–one defined by proactive engagement and collaborative efforts to address the root causes of crime. As Oakland navigates the challenges of the future, Stallworth remains committed to forging partnerships with like-minded individuals dedicated to effecting positive change.
