The Federal Trade Commission Act created the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and empowers it to prevent unfair methods of competition and unfair or deceptive acts or practices affecting commerce. This Act provides the FTC with broad investigative and enforcement authority, complementing the Department of Justice’s role in antitrust enforcement.

Enforcement of antitrust laws is primarily carried out by two federal agencies: the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Trade Commission. These agencies work to investigate potential violations, bring lawsuits against offenders, and review proposed mergers and acquisitions to ensure they do not substantially lessen competition.

Antitrust laws play a crucial role in maintaining a competitive marketplace, which benefits consumers through lower prices, higher quality products and services, and increased innovation.
