“A person gets injured. They want to hire an attorney, and their thought is…’I can’t afford an attorney’ How do you get paid?”
Spencer Freeman – Personal Injury Attorney – Pierce County, WA
“So, in this scenario, with a personal injury attorney, generally speaking, it’s never going to cost the client any money out of their pocket. Those cases are done with a contingency fee agreement, which means that my fee gets paid directly out of the settlement, a certain percentage of the settlement. In addition, I’m going to spend some money on the case, meaning I’m going to spend money on getting medical records. Or, I’m going to spend money on, maybe, experts if their needed. Or, I’m going to spend money on depositions if we are in litigation. Or, I’m going to spend money on filing the litigation.
In those scenarios, that’s money that I spend out of my pocket, and then out of the settlement I get reimbursed from that. That’s generally how a contingency fee agreement works. So, if you’re injured in an accident, it doesn’t matter if you don’t have any money in the bank to pay an attorney, you’re going to be able to find an attorney to represent you.”
