“For a lot of people, probation is almost a setup for failure.”

“Now that’s interesting. Please, elaborate on that…”

“It’s because if they are always going to have a leash on them, if you mess up, and they don’t have a job because it’s hard to keep a job when you are stuck on the cycle that heroin will give you, for example if we use that, or meth. And if you don’t have a job, you need something, you need some kind of funds to get your next fix. So how do you get that?”

“You’re going to steal, you’re going to do something illegal.”

“Unfortunately, also, because the drug has such a violent assault and intrusion into their lives, they alienate themselves from family members. So they don’t have someone who can help them out. They don’t have some way of getting to a methadone clinic. They don’t have a doctor who will prescribe methadone as an alternative, so they can’t sign up for a methadone clinic or get into a program because they haven’t got the funds because all of the effects of the drug have wiped out their resources. Now, as you noted, they’re going to want…they’re going to do what they have to do to get the fix. If that means theft, they’re doing exactly the first thing they are not supposed to do, which is not being of good conduct.
The first two requirements in probation are being of good conduct and obey all laws. And those are going to be gone if the fix is screaming like the dragon or demon that it is.”
