Personal injury lawsuits typically classify damages into 2 main categories: special damages and general damages. Special damages cover measurable financial losses like medical bills and lost wages, while general damages cover non-economic harm like pain and suffering. This article explains each category and what may be included in an insurance claim.

“Earlier, you mentioned about damages. What are the different types of damages that are in a lawsuit? That are in a personal injury claim that you can include in your claim against the insurance company?”

Spencer Freeman – Personal Injury Attorney- Pierce County, WA

“There’s two major categories of damages. They’re called ‘special damages’ and ‘general damages’. Special damages are going to be those things that you can economically put a dollar value to, I’ll say. Medical bills, loss of wages if you’ve resulted in (that) you couldn’t work, the damages to the car itself, if those haven’t been paid for. Those things that they’re actually out of pocket in order to fix. Generally speaking, those are special damages. Then, the other category is general damages. That’s what’s more understood as ‘pain and suffering’.”
