Is there, is there, are there questions that the family, the patient should ask a medical professional? Obviously, with your experience, you know, you’re looking in hindsight here. Are there questions that the patient or and or patient’s family should ask the medical professional before they start whatever, you know, the issue is to help prevent any medical malpractice from arising? I mean, you just alluded to, you know, doing their background.

Mark Kaire – Medical Malpractice Attorney – Miami-Dade County, FL

We’re talking more so about elective surgery versus emergency surgery or emergency treatment. Obviously in the emergency situation, you don’t have a choice. In an elective surgery it’s more about doing your research about who that doctor is. So, whether it’s orthopedic in nature… I guess one of the first questions you may want to ask if it’s an orthopedic procedure… a lot of the hospitals down here are teaching hospitals. So, you can ask the doctor

“Doctor, are you going to be the one that does the surgery, or are you going to have a student do the surgery”?

Obviously, that’s something you’d want to know if it’s a teaching hospital.

Plastic surgery… “Doctor, where did you train? Are you board certified? Are you a board-certified surgeon? Do you have medical malpractice insurance? Have you ever had any cases against you?”

Those are great questions to ask, and you should ask, and everything is available on the internet now, most things. So, if you take it… if you take 45 minutes or an hour and and look up this doctor and do your research because you know we do so much research before buying certain things or before doing certain things. I mean here you’re talking about you know, putting your life on the line.

“Who is the anesthesiologist that’s going to be doing this? Is this a surgical center or am I having it in a hospital? What’s the closest hospital to the surgical center? Doctor, do you have privileges at hospitals?”

Those are all questions that you would want to know and again I think we’re talking a lot about plastic surgery here, but those are questions to ask of any provider.
