This is a new area of law that you’re going to need specialty attorneys to be involved with it. And it looks like you’re on the forefront of that. Is that correct?
Steven Gacovino – Social Media Youth Harm Mass Tort Attorney – Suffolk County, NY
I feel pretty comfortable with where we are. I think that in my office, we’ve talked very deeply about this. We’ve been doing mass torts, at least me personally, I’ve been doing mass torts for nearly 25 years now at this point. This was something that I’m not suggesting that I’m the only one that thought of it, but certainly we saw this coming. We thought that it was important.
Yes, we are at the forefront of it. We are deeply involved in it. We represent several hundred, maybe even a thousand young people at this point and our inventory of cases continues to grow and therefore the opportunity to help people continues to grow.
This is a big issue for our time. It’s a huge social issue because I don’t really know many families that have been completely unaffected by this. Young people have a lot to deal with already, but young people today with social media, I think it’s gasoline on an already burning fire for them, and I do feel that they are so vulnerable to mental illness or mental harm or, like I said before, maybe predatory behavior.
But these algorithms are powerful. They get stronger and stronger every day. They get better at what they’re going to do every single day. These companies know it, and they know that there’s harm being caused.
But they want people to use these products as long and as much as they possibly can. Unless we call them out, unless we push back, I think that we would see more and more young people suffering from various different types of mental harm. It’s our intention to push back on that and to help people that have been harmed as a result.
