New York requires a minimum 25/50 policy: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident in coverage. If multiple people are injured, total benefits can’t exceed $50,000 for that accident. This article explains required coverage basics, including supplemental uninsured/underinsured motorist minimums.

Is that a mandatory insurance that you have to have if it’s required, or is that an elective?

Steven Gacovino – Personal Injury Attorney – Suffolk County (Long Island), New York

There’s a mandatory minimum of $25,000 per injury, $50,000 in the aggregate, meaning that if you had multiple parties in the car, it could never exceed $50,000. So, we call it a 25/50 policy, so that’s the minimum supplemental uninsured, underinsured motorist coverage that one can have, you have the option of bringing it up to the level that you’re insuring other people for. So, if you have a 100, 300 policy, you can bring your SUM or your supplemental uninsured, underinsured motorist coverage up to that same level of 100, 300.
