“What type of crime is really the most interesting to you now? And did it change? Has it changed from 23 years ago?”
Spencer Freeman – Criminal Defense Attorney – Pierce County, WA
“For sure it’s changed over the past 23 years. Initially, my practice would have focused on misdemeanor crimes. And for a number of reasons. One is they’re more prevalent. The risks are lower. At the time, there’s less stress with it. It’s a great way to get your feet wet as far as trial practice, trial work, and understanding investigations and understanding the practice in general. As time has gone on, those cases interest me less. And cases that have higher…for the bottom line, that have higher stakes interest me more. Cases that involve forensics are going to interest me more. Then you’re talking about assault, rape, murder cases. Whereas early on in my career, I would have taken DUI cases as a regular thing, and now I would only take a DUI case if it was a referral from a family friend or something like that, where I felt a responsibility to be involved because of the relationships. But I would prefer to have a higher felony case.”
